School of History
The School of History is well-balanced in its disciplines, with 3 first-level disciplines: Chinese History, World History, and Archeology, and 5 sub-disciplines: Ancient Chinese History, Modern Chinese History, World History of Individual Countries, History of International Relations, and Historical Relic Identification.
In 1995, the school was selected by the State Ministry of Education as its personnel training and science research base for liberal arts.
In 1996, the State Ministry of Personnel approved the school’s establishment of its post-doctoral research circulation station. The school became one of the first in the country to be included in the national Project 211.
In 1998, after the appraisal by the State Council’s Academic Degrees Commission, the school was able to enroll doctoral students to its first level discipline of the study of history.
At the school, World History is a national key discipline; Modern Chinese History is a national key cultivating discipline; and Archeology, World History, and Modern Chinese History are key disciplines of Jiangsu Province. Its Research Center of Republic of China History is a key research base of the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education. The faculty for Modern Chinese History has the title of “excellent faculty” in Jiangsu.
After generations of scholars’ industrious work, the school has already formed a good teaching system. Currently, it offers 3 programs for its undergraduates: the Study of History, Archaeology, and Historical Relic Identification. It offers 9 programs for its MA students: Modern Chinese History, Ancient Chinese History, World History, History of International Relations, Ethnology, Special History, Diplomacy, Archaeology, and Cultural Heritage and Museology. It offers 8 programs for its Ph.D. students: Modern Chinese History, Ancient Chinese History, Chinese Ideological History, World History, History of International Relations, Borderland Studies, Special History, and Archaeology.
The School of History is one of the oldest departments at Nanjing University, and its history dates back to Sanjiang Normal School, which was founded in 1902. It was actually a combination in 1952 of the Department of History and the Department of Border Politics of the former National Central University and the Department of History of Jinling University.
With generations of scholars’ hard work over the past 100 years, the School of History has achieved great success in research and teaching and won a high reputation.
In the last Undergraduate Teaching Review by the Ministry of Education, the three first-level disciplines of World History, Chinese History, and Archeology were ranked as the 4th, 5th and 6th in the national ranking system. Such ranking made the School of History one of the top two in China (next to the History and Archeology School of Beijing University).
In recent years, professors of the school made enormous achievements in their respective research fields.
Professor Zhang Xianwen’s A Collection of Historical Materials Related to Nanjing Massacre and General History of Nanjing Massacre won the first prize of the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education.
Between Tradition and Reform: Origins of British Cultural Mode, co-authored by Professors Qian Chengdan and Chen Xiaolv, won the first prize for university research of the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education.
Professor Zhang Zhuming’s The Ancient Greek Tragicomedy (1-8) won the second government publishing prize.
Many other professors and teachers of the school also published many research papers of high-quality both at home and abroad and won fine academic reputation.
At present, the School of History has 75 faculty members, of whom 39 are professors, 24 are associate professors and 4 are lecturers. Of the young teachers, 90 percent have the experience of international academic exchange in countries such as USA, UK, Australia, Korea, Italy and so on.
Besides, the school has 18 faculty members who have received state research grants, 8 selected as the New Century Talents by the State Ministry of Education, 5 who are members of Project 333, and 6 joining in the Project Blue.
In addition, the School of History has also invited many famous experts to be part-time professors and off-campus mentors such as Shan Qixiang, of the Palace Museum, Gong Liang, of the Nanjing Museum, Zhang Min, Wang Jinchao and Yin Zhiqiang, of the Nanjing University of the Arts.
